Canada’s West Coast gem is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Bordered by the ice-blue Pacific Ocean and jagged peaks mountain peaks, Vancouver is still basking in the glory of hosting two extremely successful major international events – the 1986 World’s Expo and the 2010 Winter Olympics. The city has many tourist treasures – Stanley Park, the Capilano Suspension Bridge, Gastown, Canada Place, Granville Island, nearby Grouse Mountain, Chinatown and the Vancouver Aquarium, just to name a few. Robson Street is where most of the downtown action occurs and Vancouver’s cruise ship terminal is where many Alaska-bound vessels sail from. Granville Island is one of the city’s hottest attractions. You can reach Granville at its market on the No. 50 bus or by water taxi. The location might surprise you - it's not really an island! It's actually a small peninsula of land located underneath the Granville Street Bridge on the south side of an ocean inlet called False Creek. For those looking for some outdoor action, Whistler mountain and British Columbia’s other natural wonders are never too far from downtown Vancouver.
Best time to visit: Spring, summer and fall – winter is rainy season in Vancouver.
Getting around: Vancouver’s Sky Train complements the city’s subway and bus service very nicely. Cabs can be expensive.
Our favorite hotel: Wedgewood Hotel & Spa, (845 Hornby Street) - Here is the best luxury boutique hotel in downtown Vancouver. Conde Nast's Gold List and Travel & Leisures "No. 1 in Vancouver" indicate how respected Wedgewood in the world of 5 star travel. Wedgewood does everything right, from its serene, pampering spa to its award-winning Bacchus restaurant - and of course, its accommodations.
Our favorite restaurant: Blue Water Café (1095 Hamilton Street; 604-688-8078) - An anchor in Vancouver’s culinary landscape, Blue Water Cafe is lauded as the city’s definitive destination for seafood. The dynamic dining room provides action views of the opposing 'East meets West' kitchen and raw bar. Housed in a handsome brick and beam heritage warehouse conversion, Blue Water Cafe is in the heart of historic Yaletown, the city’s vibrant and hip neighborhood.
