 St. John

St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland and Labrador, is also the largest and the oldest English city in North America. The city is a principal port of the province of Newfoundland, situated within a commodious landlocked harbor. The city’s architecture is a wonderful blend of colorful wooden houses, stately stone and brick churches, colonial buildings and modern commercial structures. The spectacular scenery is world famous. Of all major cities in Canada, St John’s is the cloudiest, foggiest, windiest, snowiest and wettest. However, St. John’s has the third mildest winter in comparison to other Canadian cities. The city is also one the country’s most prone areas for tropical cyclone activity. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to its east, where tropical storms and sometimes hurricanes travel. St. John’s attractions include Signal Hill; where the Cabot Tower was built to defend the harbor from seaward attacks; Quidi Vidi, built to protect the city from a sneak attack from behind; the Basilica of St. John the Baptist, built in 1850 and designed in the shape of a Latin cross with 43 metre towers at each corner.
