Singapore

Once you’ve visited Singapore, there’s no need to see the rest of Asia. That’s because so many Asians from surrounding regions have settled here and created vibrant districts like Little India, Chinatown and Arab Town. Singapore is one of Asia’s most modern cities but yet it still showcases its colonial roots quite well. Many of the city’s historic treasures are centered on the banks of the slow-moving Singapore River, where you can take old junk and get lost amidst a jungle of skyscrapers. The Clark and Boat Quay areas come alive every night with entertainment and great good – you must try a local delicacy known as chili crab! The beauty of Singapore is that the city is always reinventing itself. In recent years, the once-conservative bastion opened its doors to gambling and the city has quickly become the hub of high-end gambling in Asia, giving Macau a run for its money – the new Sands Resort is the centre of gambling activity and the complex is a destination itself. The city’s famed Sentosa Island is home to a new Universal Studios park as well as great hotels, spas and beaches – a great place for families! But the best activity in Singapore for tourists is walking through neighborhoods where elaborately decorated mosques and temples delight and where you get to enjoy the local tea and watch the world go by from a  seat at an old colonial restaurant.

Best time to visit: Spring, winter and fall – summers can be hot and humid

Getting around: City has a great subway and train system but cabs are reasonable and the city state is compact.

Our favorite hotel: The St. Regis (www.starwoodhotels.com/stregis) – This modern beauty is located in the prime shopping area around Orchard Road and close to all the city’s sparkling nightlife and tourist treasures.

Our favorite restaurant: Street food! You read right. Singapore is noted for its “Night Dining Safari” where you eat in different districts at street level restaurants and sample Chinese, India, Malay and other regional dishes for just pennies.

Sanitation in Singapore is so high you rarely run the risk of food poisoning here.
