 San Francisco

If there’s a more beautiful American city than San Francisco, well, we’ve not found it. The City by the Bay that inspired the song of the same title moves you with great historic attractions like cable cars, Alcatraz Prison, Fisherman’s Wharf, Chinatown and wonderful eclectic neighborhoods like Haight-Ashbury and the Mission District as well as beautiful gardens and fantastic dining. And there’s no charge for the odd earthquake one gets to feel when visiting San Francisco. There’s not enough space here to tell you all you can experience in San Francisco but we can assure you the city never disappoints. We recommend at least a week in San Francisco to fully appreciate all this charming city has to offer and then budget in a few days afterwards to explore all that borders it – like the Napa and Sonoma wine regions and  nearby Carmel.

Best time to go: Spring and fall

Favorite restaurant: The Stinking Rose (325 Columbus Ave., - 415- 781-7673) – Everything in this iconic San Francisco eatery comes smelling of garlic – event the deserts – because every dish is accented with garlic.

Favorite hotel: Sir Francis Drake (450 Powell Street) – This iconic beauty is located right on Union Square where the famed cable cars turn around and right in the heart of the designer shopping district. The 417-room hotel dates back to 1928 and gets better with age.
