You’ll be eternally grateful you visited the Eternal City. One of the oldest cities in the world – founded in the first millennium BC – much of history has marched through Italy’s capital at one time or another. Located between the Tiber and Aneine rivers, Rome is the birthplace of Roman Catholicism and the burial ground for many of its martyrs, including St. Peter, who is buried beneath the basilica which bears his name in neighboring Vatican City – the smallest city state on the planet.  Rome is a city steeped in history and architecture. The Eternal City's ancient monuments and galleries, which for centuries have been a major draw on the international tourism map, are looking more magnificent than ever after an extensive program of restoration. Streets and squares have been repaved, historic buildings illuminated at night and fountains cleaned. No city in the world is as beautiful as Rome, and few as glamorous. There’s more to see in one city block here than most cities have in total. There’s hundreds of churches and while none are as magnificent or as important as St. Peter’s Basilica, they all have a story to tell and many contain great art works. The Roman Forum and Pantheon top our favorite tourist attraction list in Rome.

Best time to visit: Spring, summer (most Romans are on holidays in August) and fall.

Favorite restaurant: Trattoria Otello alla Concordia (81 Via della Croce) - This is a true Roman eatery where you dine beneath tangled grape vines and share conversation with the family owners eating next to you. The cramped Otello stands inside the courtyard of an 18th century palace which once belonged to a noble family named Boncompagni.

Favorite hotel: InterContinental Rose  (www.InterContinental.com) -  You feel like you’ve stepped back in time when you walk into this beauty, a former nunnery and royal palace that offers great panoramic views of Rome, Vatican City and the hills that surround both. It’s just steps away from the Spanish Steps – right in the heart of the action.
