 Pittsburgh

This former steel capital of the world remains one of the most interesting and haunted cities in America. Yes, we said haunted. Many of the old homes where the steel barons of America's golden era once lived are said to be haunted and many companies now offer night tours where you'll be scared out of your wits. Even one of the classrooms on the renowned and beautiful campus of the University of Pittsburgh is said the be haunted. A few years ago, the university invited members of Pittsburgh's many ethnic communities - people came here from all over the world to dig coal and make steel - to design classrooms to honour their former homelands. The rooms are quite spectacular and tours are offered. Food in Pittsburgh is every bit as good as Chicago, New York, San Francisco and neighbouring Philadelphia and the home of some of America's top sports franchises - the Pirates, Penguins and of course the Steelers - even has its own version of the world famous Philly sandwich - the Pittsburgh sandwich is topped with French fries! This city of bridges is also home to the giant Heinz Corporation and the museum dedicated to that iconic company is a fabulous place to visit. We strongly suggest you take a funicular railway to the top of the Monongahela Incline so you can see this sprawling city at its best. Pittsburgh's airport, while small, ranks among the best in America with a shopping concourse that rivals bigs cities like Amsterdam and Singapore. Public art abounds here and a small downtown subway loop takes you to all the major tourist attactions.
