NewYork

Welcome to the center of the universe! New York has everything a traveler could wish for – even beaches on Coney Island. There’s more landmark buildings in New York than anywhere else in America and some of them, like the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty, are global icons, just like Egypt’s pyramids. From great neighborhoods like Soho, the Village, Chinatown and Little Italy, New York is a patchwork quilt of nationalities who come together to create one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in the world. So much has been written or filmed about New York that most people think they know everything about Gotham. But until you stand amongst the wonderful chaos of Time Square or come face-to-face with the characters walking along Broadway or bite into a corn beef sandwich at one of the city’s Jewish delis, you really haven’t experienced the Big Apple.  Shopping for designer knockoffs along Canal Street or climbing to the top of the Rockefeller Centre to get a panoramic view of the New York skyline and Central Park are just two “must dos” while in America’s most exciting city.

Best time to visit: There’s never a bad time to visit New York.

Getting around: Taxis are cheap – so is the subway.

Our favorite hotel: The Peninsula New York (www.peninsula.com/New_York) – This 5-star beauty just off fashionable 5th Ave. at 55th is small by New York hotel standards and that’s why we like it so much. All the chic shopping of 5th and Madison avenues are just steps away from the front door of this landmark property.

Our favorite restaurant:  Scalinatella Restaurant (212-207-8280; 201 E 61st St, Between 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue) - The Scene – regulars sneak down an unassuming stairway into this cavernous, brick-wrapped room for a distinguished dose of la dolce vita. The mood is formal yet fun. Scalinatella has been famous for two things: superlative traditional Italian cooking and a colorful cast of servers.
