Mexico is one of North America’s most beautiful cities. But we would be amiss not to warn you that it’s also one of the most dangerous places in the world. Crime is rampant in this impoverished city but with the help of a local guide and driver, it can be a fascinating place to explore. The old colonial churches and squares are the best outside Europe and the museums and nightlife will fascinate you. Don’t miss the Basilicas of Guadalupe, National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia), National Palace (Palacio Nacional), Templo Mayor and the Zocalo (in Plaza de la Constitucion). The green area around the city’s old university also delights.
Currency: The Peso – $1 Canadian equals 12,000 pesos
Best time to visit: Winter – when Mexico is canopied by bright sunshine and warm weather.
Getting around: Mexico’s capital has a subway system but it’s old and dangerous. Cabs aren’t much better so may we suggest when touring Mexico City you hire and guide and drive – both are very affordable and will keep you safe.
Hotels: Like all major international cities, Mexico City has a great variety of 5 and 4-star properties as well as some wonderful boutique-style properties. Location is what’s important here – more for you’re safety than anything erlse because Mexico City remains one of the most dangerous in the world. Go with a well recognized name in the hotel industry here.
Our favorite restaurant: Fonda El Refugio (166 Liverpool Street – 55 5207-2732) - This classic old-style, semi-formal restaurant is considered by many to have the best traditional food in Mexico City, featuring favorite dishes from around the country.
