Lasvegas

Welcome to the entertainment capital of the world! Las Vegas, the mega city that grew up out of the desert sands of Nevada, has blossomed into one of the greatest cities in the world, welcoming more visitors than most countries each year. The gambling and entertainment Mecca has gone through many stages of development over the years – mob hangout in the ’50s and ’60s; an entertainment paradise where the likes of Frank Sinatra, Eddie Fisher, Celine Dion and Wayne Newton crooned for the gamblers; a family fun zone where terrifying rollercoaster rides topped casino buildings; and now a sophisticated getaway where all of the aforementioned attractions have been pushed aside by chic hotels, spas, golf courses, upscale shopping malls and the most glittering collection of hotels in one place in the world. But for all that, most people still come here to gamble and each year Las Vegas casinos rack in billions of dollars in profits. What gamblers miss when they come here is some of the most stunning natural beauty that United States has to offer – starting with the Grand Canyon, a five-hour bus ride away, and a desert landscape that never seems to stop amazing.

Best time to visit: Las Vegas is open 24/7 12 months of the year and while summer temperatures can reach well over 40C, most visitors never experience the heat thanks to the well air-conditioned comfort of the hotels, casinos and shopping malls.

Getting around: Las Vegas recently installed an LRT people mover which runs a good distance along the main Strip and connects most of the newer hotels. Because the city’s airport is a short drive from the Strip, most people rely on cabs to get from one casino table to another.

Our favorite hotel: Wow! There’s so many – the new Wynn, Bellagio and Venetian are all contenders but for our money, we like the Four Seasons , mainly because there’s no gambling on premises – a side door does connect to neighboring casinos, though. The Four Seasons  Las Vegas is an oasis of calm in this hectic city.

Our favorite restaurant: As part of its “chic” stage, Las Vegas casino operators invited a ton of celebrity chefs like Emeril Lagasses and Wolfgang Puck to set up restaurants here but the upscale dining options are a bit too rich for our budget so we recommend sticking to the hotel buffets, which offer great value as well as every food group imaginable!
