Long before China burst onto to the scene as an economic powerhouse, Hong Kong was the gateway to Asia for westerners. And despite the fact Beijing and Shanghai have become far more important than Hong Kong in the China landscape, the former British colony remains one of Asia’s most dynamic and important cities. Hong Kong’s skyline is still one of the most dramatic in the world and its nightlife ranks among the most exciting in the world. Old Hong Kong and its tiny double-decker trams evoke memories of colonial times. A tram trip to the top of Victoria Peak rewards riders with one of the most impressive city views in the world and a visit to Stanley Market is always recommended for tourists. Shopping on Hong Kong Island or across the bay in Kowloon is where you can find great bargains, especially in the old Jade Market. Don’t forget to take a ride on the city’s iconic ferry, although Hong Kong’s subway is far faster.
Currency: Hong Kong has its own dollar. One Canadian dollar equals almost 8 Hong Kong dollars.
Best time to visit: The ideal time is October to December. The temperature ranges from 9C to 24C during winter, and from 26C to 33C during summer.
Getting around: Hong Kong has one of the most modern subways in Asia but the Star ferry which connects Kowloon with Hong Kong Island and the old colonial trams are must rides for tourists. All are very cheap.
Language: Cantonese is the local language but English is widely used.
Our favorite hotel: The Langham (www.hongkong.langhamhotels.com) in Kowloon. It’s a moderately-priced five star that’s close to great shopping and very near the Star Ferry terminal.
Our favorite restaurant: Any of the neighborhood eateries along Canton or Peking roads – they’re all reasonably priced and very good.
