This city is Canada’s official oil capital. Also known as Fort Mac, this hamlet has the status of being the largest unincorporated "city" in Alberta and is a multicultural community, attracting people from all corners of Canada and the world thanks to its oil-patch work. In 1995, Fort McMurray incorporated into Wood Buffalo, giving up its city status and its own municipal government. Even though the population is as high as it is, Fort McMurray is still considered a hamlet. Fort McMurray is the heart of one of Alberta’s and Canada’s major hubs of oil production, located near the Athabasca Oil Sands. This is the largest single known oil deposit in the world with an estimated 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels of heavy oil called “bitumen” lying under a thin blanket of muskeg. Winter is one of the most beautiful, scenic seasons in the region, with the Aurora Borealis making some amazing appearances. Some of Canada’s most beautiful rivers and lakes are located just outside Fort McMurray. Nestled in the boreal forest at the confluence of four rivers, Fort McMurray is a vibrant community rich in history and with an unlimited potential for the future.
