This may be the most amazing city in the British Isles. With Edinburgh Castle dominating the city skyline, one must walk Edinburgh to truly appreciate all it has to offer tourists. The walk to the castle along the Royal Mile is one of the most fascinating in the world. The tiny lanes (closes) that lead off the Royal Mile all have a name and story to tell – some pretty horrific since many are occupied by ghosts of people buried there during the city’s plague period. The city is blessed with many green spaces and lots of moss-covered graveyards where poets, paupers and princess are buried together. The Deacon Brodie Pub on the corner of Bank St/ and the Royal Mile is a great place to visit – its one-time owner was the inspiration for the Robert Louis Stevenson classic “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.” The annual summer military tattoo held in Edinburgh Castle is always a hit with tourists.
Best time to visit: Spring, summer and fall
Getting around: Like most old British cities, Edinburgh is compact so walking is your best bet.
Our favorite hotel: The Rocco Forte Balmoral (www.thebalmoralhotel.com) – With its majestic clock tower, the hotel is a unique and contemporary luxury five-star property in the very heart of Edinburgh. Located on Princes Street, in Edinburgh's main shopping area and next to Waverley Station, The Balmoral is close to the leading luxury department stores and within walking distance of many Edinburgh attractions like the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle.
Our favorite restaurant: The Kitchen (www.thekitchin.com - 78 Commercial St.) - The Restaurant opened in 2006 by husband and wife team Tom & Michaela Kitchin on Edinburgh’s stylish waterfront. It was awarded a Michelin star six months after opening.
