Often called simply Big D, Dallas is one of the largest cities in the United States. Live Large and Think Big is the city’s motto and in 2011 it hosted the biggest sporting event in the United States, the Super Bowl. Dallas, which was claimed as a part of Spain in the 1500s, is a culturally diverse city and its population is now mostly made up of Hispanics. Dallas has a large arts section in its downtown district featuring several renowned galleries and theatres. Before or after a gallery tour or performance, taste Dallas famous barbeque, Mexican or Tex-Mex foods. In recent years, many posh establishments have also opened in Dallas – the city’s Chinese-fusion restaurants are quickly gaining in popularity with visitors. For sports enthusiasts, the Dallas Stars of the NHL, NFL Cowboys, NBA Mavericks and major league baseball Texas Rangers offer great entertainment. Top attractions include Reunion Tower; the Texas School Book Depository Museum from where the shot that killed President John F. Kennedy was fired by Lee Harvey Oswald; White Rock Lake Park; the Dallas Arboretum; and Botanical Garden and Aquarium.
