Often called the Windy City because of the gusts that blow in off Lake Michigan, Chicago is a true international centre and one of America’s most diverse cities. Like Toronto – its sister city – Chicago features many colorful ethnic neighborhoods, which reflect the gathering of many different nationalities in America’s heartland. Chicago has grown to become one of America’s most important cities and its skyline and architecture rank among the best in the world – we highly recommend an architectural tour which can enjoy from the deck of a boat on the Chicago River. There’s also canoe trips offered on the river, which flows into the lake. The city’s Lakeshore area has been spruced up in recent years with a theme park and aquarium and the neighborhood restaurants in Chicago – especially the deep dish pizza parlors – are legendary. The city’s sports franchises – hockey Blackhawks, baseball Cubs and White Sox; basketball Bulls and football Bears - are some of the most followed on the planet and to see a sporting event in a Chicago venue like Wrigley Field is truly an experience you’ll never forget.
Best time to visit: Spring, summer and fall
Favorite hotel: The Peninsula (108 East Superior Street – 312-337-2888) – This Asian chain beauty is often rated as the “best” hotel in America and for good reason – it is! Located in the heart of the shopping district, the Penn as its known locally is opulent and high end all the way, but hey, you only live once!
Favorite restaurant: Buddy Guy’s Legend (700 S. Wabash Ave., - 312-427-1190) – This eatery owned by the legendary blue’s singer of the same name serves up some mean southern dishes (our favorite is the deep fried okra) and some sweet blues music which, if you’re lucky, is conducted by Buddy Guy himself if he’s not on tour.
