Calgary is a dynamic city situated on the banks of the Bow River, close to Alberta's majestic Rocky Mountains. The Calgary Stampede is undoubtedly Calgary's best-known visitor attraction. This event, featuring a large parade and world-class rodeo, draws more than a million people each year. The host city of the 1988 Winter Olympic Games takes pride in its sporting legacy. Canada Olympic Park is a multi-purpose athletic facility designed for skiing, snowboarding, bobsleigh and luge during the winter and mountain biking during the summer. The Scotiabank Saddledome is the home of the NHL's Calgary Flames, as well as being the venue for countless events and concerts throughout the year. Other attractions, including the Glenbow Museum, Calgary Tower and Eau Claire Market are other great places to visit year-round. Calgary has become the headquarters for most of Canada’s large oil companies and because of its recent wealth, the city offers some chic shopping and accommodation.
Best time to visit: Spring, summer and fall.
Getting around: Calgary has an limited LRT system servicing mostly downtown and a very good bus service.
Our favorite hotel: Fairmont Palliser (www.Fairmont.com/Palliser) – This landmark hotel may not be as glamorous as Fairmont’s palace hotels located in nearby Banff and Lake Palliser is conveniently situated near the city’s financial district and within walking distance of shopping, arts, culture and entertainment venues.
Our favorite restaurant: This being cattle country, you must have a steak. One of the newest and hippest places in Calgary these days is the Vintage Chophouse & Tavern (322 - 11 Ave. S.W., 403 262-7262) which is co-owned by PGA golfer Stephen Ames. The steak and atmosphere here are the best in town!
