This city of Gaudi is one of the most beautiful and artistic Europe has to offer. Grand cathedrals, great squares, robust shopping and entertainment districts, and some of the best restaurants in the world call this city home. For a real treat, dine at one of the city's famous tapas restaurants where meals are cheap and very good. Gaudi's La Sagrade Familia is the city's most famous and popular tourist landmark, despite the fact the great church remains unfinsihed after being started decades ago. Other Gaudi works dominate the public places in this wonderful city which once hosted the Summer Olympics - leftover structures from that international event still line the city's busy waterfront where seafood restraunts and nightclubs call home. Picasso is another of Barcelona's famous artistic citizens and the museum dedicated to his works is among the best in the world.
Best time to visit: Barcelona is an all-season city – late spring or early summer avoids the city’s famed humidity.
Getting around: Barcelona has a subway system but it can be unsafe at night so be careful!
Our favorite hotel: The Claris Hotel (www.derbyhotels.com/Claris-Hotel-Barcelona) – This 5-star gem is located in the city’s financial district close to all the main attractions but far enough away from the tourist crowds to keep it quaint. The hotel owner loves Egyptian antiquities and established a small version of the famed Egyptian Museum in the lower part of the property.
Our favorite restaurant: Tapas is the main dish in Barcelona and most people don’t eat until late at night – dinner is served around midnight here and the parties don’t usually end until 3 a.m. Our favorite tapas restaurant in Barcelona is the Cerveceria Catalana at 236 Mallorca, just off the main shopping street.
